RESEARCHERS VITAMIN D and MS
Vitamin D and MS scientists
Listed below in alphabetical order are some of the world's most prominent vitamin D and MS scientists. Considered world‑class experts, their extensive knowledge of, and dedication to, the science of vitamin D and MS is evident in the invaluable contribution each has made to humanity's current understanding of vitamin D and MS. Research performed by each scientist can be viewed by visiting their webpage.
Alberto Ascherio, MD, DrPH
The purpose of Professor Aberto Ascherio's research group is to identify causes, risk factors (positive and negative), and biomarkers of susceptibility and early diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS), Parkinson’s disease (PD), and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Because of their progressive and disabling nature, these diseases have major adverse personal, social, and economic consequences. Prevention and early detection are critical, because there are no cures and the clinical diagnosis typically occurs after substantial and often irreversible neuronal loss, and at a time when neuroprotective interventions are probably too late to be fully effective.

Jodie M Burton MD, MSc, FRCPC
Jodie M Burtons research activities focus on the clinical aspects of multiple sclerosis (MS). Her Main focus of research is on the role of vitamin D in the treatment and prevention of MS, and determination of the appropriate level and dose to achieve meaningful benefits in this population. A safety phase I/II trial of high-dose oral vitamin D3 has been completed. Further research is planned to more rigorously determine the potential role of vitamin D in relapse prevention, MRI activity in those with relapsing MS and its role as a predictor and target in those with a clinically isolated syndrome (the first demyelinating event).

Colleen Hayes, Ph.D.
Professor Colleen Hayes is a nationally recognized MS researcher and professor of biochemistry at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She has studied nutrition and the immune system for more than 25 years and vitamin D and MS for nearly 20 years. Dr. Hayes’ research laid the foundation for much of the research into the role of Vitamin D and the risk of developing MS.

Robyn Lucas, MD, Ph.D.
Lucas’ research involves multi-centre quantitative observational epidemiology in two primary research fields: understanding environmental effects on immune function and evaluating the pros and cons of sun exposure to develop sun exposure messages for optimum health.

Ingrid van der Mei, Ph.D.
Dr van der Mei is an epidemiologist who focuses her research on risk factors of Multiple Sclerosis onset and progression. She also examines how genes and environmental factors interact with each other to cause disease. Lastly, her work focuses on vitamin D deficiency in Australians and she translates her findings in new recommendations for the general public on sun exposure and vitamin D.

Reinhold Vieth, Ph.D.
Dr Reinhold Vieth is a Professor in the Department of Nutritional Sciences, and the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology, University of Toronto. He is an internationally recognized expert on the clinical nutrition of vitamin D as well as its pharmacology and safety. His research has followed the path of vitamin D from the basic science lab, to bone health and osteoporosis, to breast and prostate cancers. His current focus includes the role of vitamin D deficiency in gestational diabetes, and multiple sclerosis, including clinical trials of vitamin D treatment. The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, lists four of Dr Vieth’s publications among its list of top-25 most read articles. He is professionally certified as a Clinical Chemist, and at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto, is Director of the Bone and Mineral Laboratory, as well as Director of Point of Care Testing.
